No Android 2.x for Samsung T939

It looks like the Samsung Behold II won’t be getting any type of upgrade whatsoever. Although there is no “official” comment being released to the public, many T939 owners have confirmed the information directly from Samsung and T-Mobile. Basically, the T939 will end up like the G1, obsolete. Why does this matter? Well, Cupcake (Android 1.5) lacks a few features necessary for certain apps and the fact that it doesn’t support Bluetooth file transfer is ridiculous.

Samsung isn’t releasing an upgrade because it’s working on releasing “better” phones i.e. Samsung Galaxy S. Future adopters of the Behold II will end up owning an obsolete paperweight compared to smartphones being offered by other carriers. It’s really sad because even in the custom modification community of smartphones, it’s been a true hassle to cook up anything beyond Android 1.6 that’s fully functional.

I was lucky enough to receive this phone as a gift and it has served me well. It has postponed my desire to buy a new laptop, but I could really use an update to be able to do more. Why not release it with Donut to begin with? No wonder it didn’t sell like they expected. Put Eclair or Froyo, make a new ad and presto, it’ll sell like fresh bread.

Update:

If you missed the opportunity for the over the air 1.6 upgrade, there are options out there to upgrade your phone, they require time and patience and basically hacking your phone. I no longer have a working Samsung Behold II so I won’t be much of help. I can say that before it died I tried rooting it on my Windows 7 64 bit computer and could never get it to fully recognize the phone drivers and then tried on an older PC running Windows XP and didn’t have much luck either so I gave up on updating it myself and continued to use it as is until one day I threw it in a fit of rage and killed it. The screen blacked out. I kinda regret it but I guess it was meant to be. R.I.P. Samsung T939, we had a love/hate relationship that was bound to end sometime.
