My list of Android apps
There are a lot apps in the Android Market but not all of them are great. These are the ones I consider to be decent, helpful, or great to kill time.
APNdroid This app allows you to turn on or off your network data connection (3G, EDGE, etc.) Why is this useful? It helps conserve battery life when you don’t need to be “always connected” and it also helps limit data usage.
Task Manager by Rhythm Software You’d be surprised how many apps run in the background. Task Manager helps kill the apps, making your phone faster and improving battery life.
AndroZip This app compresses and decompresses files in the most common file types (zip, tar, rar) and also works as a file manager, it includes a task manager as well.
Dolphin Browser This browser adds sharing to delicious, facebook, and twitter fast and simple without installing other apps. Tabbed browsing, gestures, and ease of use plus what I mentioned makes this my default browser for now.
Wapedia Wapedia is basically a mobile app for Wikipedia but it also includes other wiki sources as well. It’s easy to search and gives you the option of opening a Wikipedia link from the browser (like search results) in Wapedia and it formats the content very nicely.
AndFTP Great FTP app. You can add multiple servers, and it lets you upload, download, rename, delete, change permissions, etc.
Pixelpipe Pro This app is just great for uploading media to several sites. The free version is limited to text and pictures but for 99ยข it’s worth paying for the hassle free uploading to facebook and youtube on the go.
Seesmic I’ve tried a lot of twitter clients and when Seesmic added multiple accounts I installed it and never went back to the other options out there. I used Swift for a while but it wasn’t reliable outside of WiFi. Seesmic works great and has a lot of options.
Tumblroid If you really need to use tumblr on the go, this is the best app. I really recommend buying it. Developer improves the app with each update.
IcViewer This app opens pdf files. It takes a while to open them depending on the size but it works without a fuss.
Manga Droid Manga on the go! Read Japanese comics anywhere. The list of available manga is pretty long and it’s easy to pick up where you left off when you add to your favourites list.
FlashLight by Brenton Klik Use your phone as a flashlight, brightness can be adjusted with a touch/swipe of a finger.
Movies by Flixster Movie trailers, reviews, and local listings right on your phone. Simply awesome.
Laputa Turn your phone into an e-book reader. Laputa (whose name gives me giggles when read in Spanish) is an awesome app for reading e-books. There are different sources you can choose from to download books. I’ve read about 20+ books using this app. It even has backlighting options for Day/Night reading.
Last.fm Your personal radio station on the go. Great for discovering artists.
AP Mobile News on the go. Check local, worldwide, sports, headline news, whatever you want to subscribe. Includes photo gallery and videos.
Skyfire An alternative browser. Not all content is viewable on a mobile phone, especially videos. Skyfire does their best to deliver flash content videos to your phone. Sometimes I can’t get a YouTube video to open so I start Skyfire, paste the link with the embedded youtube video or the direct youtube link in desktop mode, and 9 out of 10 times Skyfire optimizes the video for me and makes it viewable. The browser is a little slow but it’s great for watching videos.
Bartender An app for mixing drinks. You can search drinks by ingredients. Very convenient.
Swarm A torrent client for your phone. It costs money but it’s a small price to pay for being able to download right to your phone on the go.
Dropbox You should really backup your files and Dropbox makes it easy. It offers 2GB for free and although that may not seem like much, if your memory card goes wonky and you lose your photos, ringtones, etc. You wish you had a backup. It happened to me and I wanted to cry.
Moozone Just like Dropbox it offers 2GB for free. You can upload your music files to Moozone and listen/download your library anywhere. See my full review for more details.
WordPress If you have a WordPress blog, you should get this app. Updating this site has been easier thanks to the WordPress app.
SNESoid Play classic SNES games on your phone. The $4 are worth it. Download ROMs (games) for free, just do a search for SNES ROMs. I played Street Fighter Alpha on my phone and it was awesome.
Paper Toss A game about throwing paper balls. It definitely kills boredom and helps save trees.
ActionPotato A cute game to kill time.
Iconic Memory Exercise your mind with this game. Aim for a higher score.
PapiJump Addictive little game to kill time.
Light Racer Inspired by the Light Cycle game from Tron.
Poke a Mole A whack a mole game for your phone.
My Days A period and ovulation tracker.
That’s it for my list. There always new apps coming out so I’ll be on the lookout for anything worth sharing.
