Oh noes! Zee goths are coming.
The other day I was patiently waiting by the school gate to pick up my daughter. I don’t know any of the other parents/grandparents but I chat a bit every now and then. I seldom engage in a conversation but I nod in agreement and smile a friendly smile. Anyway, a black PT Cruiser enters the parking lot and one of the ladies said “Llegaron los góticos.” which translates to “The goths are here.” Her tone wasn’t ugly so I looked towards the car curiously. The guy was wearing one of those big rasta looking beanies to cover his long dreads I guess and the woman, I’ve seen her before at the school, she usually dresses in black and has long bright red curly hair.
I don’t like labels because I like to think I’m eclectic but I know I’m a freak with dark tendencies. I’m not a hipocritical person so I don’t like to judge people but it’s true that certain people fit a mold. Even so, I have my reservations. “You can’t judge a book by its cover.” the saying goes. So it kind of bothered me when the other women were saying that the “goth” couple were Hot Topic kids when I could clearly see that they weren’t. Maybe I’m getting old and some day I’ll end up like those women. But one thing I do know is that it’s not polite to misjudge. Sure it’s fun every once in a while when something is genuinely funny but there’s a time and a place for everything and it’s pretty shameful for adults to be calling names. Then again, what do I know? I’m your typical isolated writer that’s socially inept. I wonder what they say about ME. But if you can’t joke about yourself, you need a sense of humor, ne?
